How much does adult hockey cost?

Short answer: it varies a lot by city, rink and program. Below are approximate gear prices and the actual published prices of programs listed on this site. We're a new site, so this is a small sample, not a national survey. Prices were current when we last checked each program; always confirm with the rink.

Gear: typical price ranges

These are approximate ranges for new, entry-level adult (senior) gear, based on prices we found at Hockey Monkey, Pure Hockey and Ice Warehouse in October 2026. Prices and sales change often.

  • Full skater kit, new: roughly $850 to $1,000.
  • Used route (new helmet, used pads): roughly $350 to $450.
  • Skates: about $90 to $300 for entry-level, the biggest swing in the total.
  • Helmet with cage: about $80. Buy this one new.
  • Goalie kit, new: roughly $2,000 to $2,650.

Some programs lend gear or include rental skates, so check before you buy. The starter gear guide has the full item-by-item breakdown.

Learn to skate (step 1)

Among adult learn-to-skate classes on this site that publish a session price, we found about $91 to $480 per session. Examples:

  • Allen Community Ice Rink, Intro to Skating (Allen, TX): $91 for 7 weeks / $104 for 8 weeks
  • Bloomington Ice Garden, Adult Learn to Skate (Bloomington, MN): $112 for 7 weeks
  • Polar Ice Cary and Wake Forest, Adult/Teen (Raleigh area, NC): $198 for 9 weeks
  • Boca Ice, Adult Learn to Skate (Boca Raton, FL): $240 for 8 weeks, plus $25 Learn to Skate USA membership
  • Sno-King Snoqualmie, Adult Basics (Seattle area): $480 per series

Some rinks charge per class instead, for example $20 per class at the Dallas Stars StarCenters when registered ahead. Many classes also require a Learn to Skate USA membership (about $17 to $25 a year on the listings we checked). Chelsea Piers' Adult Hockey Edge in Manhattan, a hockey-focused skating class, is $810 for 12 sessions.

Learn to play (step 2)

Among multi-week adult learn-to-play programs on this site that publish a price, we found a range from free to about $800, with many between roughly $250 and $400. Examples:

  • Anaheim Ducks Adult Learn to Play (Orange County, CA): free; rental skates and limited loaner gear
  • Denver Women's Hockey League Hockey 101 (Arvada, CO): free for prospective members
  • JMS Hockey 101 (Minneapolis): $109 early bird, then $125, for six sessions plus two chalk talks
  • Crusaders Learn to Play (Groton, MA): $130 for six practices and a scrimmage
  • UPMC Penguins Rinks Adult Learn to Play (Cranberry Twp., PA): $243.99 for 9 weeks
  • MSE Adult Hockey Clinic (Trenton and Mt. Clemens, MI): $249 for 10 sessions
  • Montclair State Learn to Play (Little Falls, NJ): $350 for the fall session
  • Sno-King ALTP 1 (Seattle area): $400 per series
  • Kraken Community Iceplex Adult Learn to Play (Seattle): $510.48 for 12 classes, plus $52.50 for a jersey and socks
  • AHA Beginner School (Golden Valley, MN): $720, equipment not included
  • Florida Panthers Adult Learn to Play (South Florida): $775 plus $56 USA Hockey membership, includes a set of equipment to keep (some restrictions apply)
  • Chelsea Piers Adult Hockey Prep (Manhattan): $797.50 for 11 sessions

Per session, that works out very differently, so compare the number of sessions and what's included (gear, jerseys, ice time). Some programs also require a USA Hockey membership on top.

Beginner leagues (step 3)

Season fees for beginner leagues on this site that list a price run from about $300 to $960 per player. Examples:

  • Pines Ice Arena novice divisions (Pembroke Pines, FL): $300 for the fall season ($350 late)
  • Suburban Ice Farmington Hills BADHL (Farmington Hills, MI): $480
  • The Hockey Academy Novice/D leagues (Woburn and Boxborough, MA): $520 for a fall season of 15 to 16 games
  • Lakewood ICE Rookie Division (Lakewood, CA): $564
  • Hockey North America Beginner Program (Elmsford, NY; West Orange, NJ): $595, 8 instructional sessions then 8 games
  • Kraken Hockey League beginner divisions (Seattle): $959.25 free-agent fee for a 23+ game season, plus a player pass and USA Hockey membership

Goalies often play free or at a discount.

Drop-in, stick & puck and pickup (step 4)

Single sessions on this site run about $5 to $25. Examples: Doug Woog Arena open hockey (South St. Paul, MN) $5; Jack Kirrane Rink drop-in (Brookline, MA) $10; Dallas Stars StarCenters adult drop-in $22; Boca Ice open hockey $25. Many rinks sell punch cards that lower the per-session price.

Ways to keep costs down

  • Look for free intro programs or ones that lend gear before you buy.
  • Buy used pads, pants and gloves; buy the helmet new.
  • Ask about early-bird prices, prorated late registration and payment plans, which several programs offer.
  • Ask about goalie discounts if you're willing to play goal.

Find prices near you

Every listing on our city pages shows the published price and links to the official source.

How we got these numbers: program prices are copied from the official program pages linked in our city listings, as of the date we last checked each one (mostly October 2026). Ranges only include programs that publish a price. Many programs don't, and those aren't counted.
