Starter gear
Most programs need full equipment: helmet with cage, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, pants, shin guards, skates, stick, and a jock or jill.
Starter gear guideFAQ
I can't skate at all. Where do I start?
Start with an adult learn-to-skate class (step 1). Novi Ice Arena's Adult/Teen classes are for skaters 14 and up learning how to skate, and Detroit Skating Club runs adult classes and an Adult Coffee Club.
Do I need my own gear?
Yes for most hockey programs. Hockey North America's beginner program does not include skates, sticks or protective equipment, and St. Clair Shores' adult drop-in hockey requires full equipment. See the starter gear guide.
Is there a league for true beginners?
Suburban Ice's Beginner Adult Developmental Hockey League (BADHL) in Farmington Hills and Macomb mixes skill work with no-checking games, and Hockey North America's program ends with 8 games. Ask about the level before you sign up.
