Starter gear guide

FAQ

I can't skate at all. Where do I start?

Start with an adult learn-to-skate class (step 1). The Dallas Stars StarCenters run Learn to Skate USA Adult 1-6 classes for ages 15 and up, and Allen Community Ice Rink offers Intro to Skating for adults.

Do I need my own gear?

Not for the Dallas Stars Adult Rookies program, which provides all equipment to first-time players. The Adult Hockey Academy and the Northlake I-League require your own equipment. See the starter gear guide.

Is a 'D league' for beginners?

Look for an instructional league first. StarCenter Northlake's I-League and Allen's AAHL I are designed for beginners, and Allen's D2 division is mostly players who learned hockey as adults. Ask about the level before you sign up.

Are these details current?

Each card shows the date we last checked it and links to the official source. Schedules and prices change, so confirm with the rink.
